Drill Team Results

The Cary High NJROTC academic team traveled to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland over the weekend to compete in the National Brain Brawl Championship.  The Cary cadets finished in 18th place in the country in their first opportunity to compete at the national level.   The cadets who competed were, senior, Thomas Avelsgard, junior, Jacob Bulifant, sophomore, Ryan Wood, and freshman, Charlie Loyack.  Please congratulate them.  The highlight of the competition for the Cary team was in the individual round, in which Cary’s freshman, Charlie Loyack finished in 4th place in the country!  Congratulations, Charlie!!

The Cary High NJROTC Academic Team competed on Saturday, February 6, 2016 against seven other teams in the Western Warrior Brain Brawl at Western Alamance High School.   The Cary High cadets won a decisive victory, placing first in both of their preliminary rounds and then winning in a rout in the final round.  Please congratulate senior, Thomas Avelsgard, junior Jacob Bulifant, sophomore Ryan Wood, and freshman and team MVP, Charlie Loyack!   As a result of their victory, Cary High has received an invitation to compete in the JROTC National Academic Championship in Annapolis, Maryland in April.   Congratulations, cadets!

The Cary High NJROTC marksmanship team competed against eleven teams in their regional qualifying match in Burlington, NC .  The Cary High shooters had the highest team score in the kneeling position and the third highest score in standing and prone.  The team finished in second place overall which qualifies them to advance to the Area championship in South Carolina in January.   Out of fifty competitors, the Cary team had the 3rd place individual shooter, Jeffrey Tran, the 5th place individual shooter, Charlotte Galt, the 9th place shooter, Brendan Serianni, and the 13th place shooter, John Smilowski

The Cary High NJROTC competed against eleven teams in Myrtle Beach on Saturday, December 5, 2015.  The team took 1st place in the 8×200 relay and a third place overall in Athletic events.   They also brought home a 2nd place trophy in Academics and a 3rd place for unarmed exhibition drill.  For the Overall competition, the Cary unit finished in 4th place and they qualified to advance to the Area Six championship meet in February.


The Cary High NJROTC team traveled to Greensboro on Saturday, November 14, 2015 to compete against nine other teams in Marksmanship, Orienteering, and Academics.  The Cary team finished 3rd overall in Marksmanship.  Our top team shooter was Brendan Serianni, who finished in 6th place out of 36 shooters, and Charlotte Galt finished in 7th place.  The other Cary 3rd place team members were John Smilowski and Sean Hart.   In the Academic competition, the Cary High team finished in First place.  In Individual competition, Cary had the highest individual score with Demarcus Mears, the second place score with Jacob Bulifant, and two individuals tied for fifth place, Alex Hill and Thomas Avelsgard.   Congratulate these Cary cadets for sweeping four of the top five positions.


The Cary High NJROTC athletic team participated in the Clayton Ironman Competition on Saturday against 14 teams.  They placed 1st in three events and third in two events, which earned them a victory in the overall event!   Please congratulate team captain Liesl Schleusener and team members Sam Handy, Ian Armstrong, Payton Gingras, Abenicio Chavez, John Smilowski, Stephany Estermyer, and Demetrius Gatlin
